Entitlement or Confidence

Bankers are upset that their bonuses are too low. Employees of companies that have lost enough money to require hand-outs from the government are unhappy. They still have their jobs and they are earning a good wage ($60K before bonus at a minimum), but unlike other professions where the bonus is compensation based on the success of the employee and the firm, bankers expect to get paid. It's what they signed up for and they deserve it.

It takes a certain kind of person to succeed in highly-paid service companies, e.g. investment banks and consulting firms. But one trait that these professionals share with successful people everywhere is a feeling of entitlement. An overblown sense of entitlement is neither necessary for success nor does it guarantee a great career, but the vast majority of people I have met who have 'succeeded' academically, professionally, and personally have all felt that they were owed something.

With the grade-inflation and high-curves of today's most competitive universities, one does not need to be the best or even one of the best to receive an 'A.' Those students who take it upon themselves to argue for grades; those who fight to turn each 'A' into an 'A+' because they worked so hard, or because they were sick on the day of the final, or 'just because' do end up raising their grades. It doesn't work all of the time, but professors and TAs are human and have limited time to deal with all the mounds bullshit involved in these discussions. Sometimes teachers give in and sometimes they stand firm, but for a student who is able to disengage from reality enough to demand the grades "they deserve" it is a very successful strategy.

There is a similar sort of confidence that is very helpful when discussing compensation and career advancement with your boss and when selling projects to clients. It is a confidence that is only tangentially related to reality and completely overcomes any questions of self-doubt or introspection. There's never a danger of an employee well shrouded in entitled being convinced of why they were passed over or why they weren't qualified; those are mistakes on the part of the supervisor.

I wonder if the same entitlement that served people so well while climbing the corporate ladder is what screws over their supervisors and clients when something goes wrong. When does confidence in oneself become entitlement? Is a feeling of entitlement useful or is it only it's correlation with confidence that makes it seem so?

Confused about media bias...

"Despite tensions between Jews and Arabs, violence is rare. Last August, a Jewish army deserter killed four Israeli Arabs in a shooting rampage on a bus. The attacker was killed by a mob.

In the worst ethnic violence in Israel, police killed 13 Arab-Israeli demonstrators who blocked a highway in October 2000. "

Two problems with this last sentence: What makes one incident of ethnic violence worse than others? and also it has very little to do with the story: Two people blow up a Christian holy site, one is Jewish one is Christian and both are psychotic. How is this ethnic violence? The story seems to follow this path:

Crazy people blow up shrine for no discernable reason, and are certainly not reiligiously inspired-> here's some info about these two crazy people -> Jewish Israelis and Arab Israelis don't fight a lot -> worst Ethnic violence in Israel is when Jews kill Arabs.

How does one determine the worst ethnic violence in Israel? Is 13 people the greatest number of people killed in Israel in a single incident since 2000?
"October 4, 2003: Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at the Maxim restaurant in Haifa killing 20 people and wounding more than 60."

Is it because they were protester? That may be a factor. If Palestinian attacks on Israelis are not considered so bad because the kill restaurant-goers instead of demonstrators then I disagree with the rubric, and feel that it is unfair to Jewish Israelis.

The only way I can get the sentence to make sense is if Palestinians kill Israelis in nationalistic violence and Jew kill Arabs in ethnic violence, but since the killing is inspired by racial/religious hatred and fear wouldn't it all be considered ethnic violence in Israel?

Maybe it's only because the AP reports a bit to the left, and I don't really see anyone who reports a bit to the right...

Small world.

Nan told me once that there was some basketball movie which had one of our class mates as an 'extra.' Last night while watching Coach Carter I discovered not just Danny from Exeter but also Inches from CTY had parts in the movie.

It's a bit weird thinking about someone you know breaking into acting the hard way, Danny had a couple of shots in which the camera was on him for more than a second. In one scene he was the last player in line glaring at Samuel Jackson, so when the camera paused for effect at the end of a pan that swept the team, Danny's glare (which was quite funny) got a bit of camera time. The other shot in which I remember him was during the epic last game jumping and tearing at his shirt in anxiety over the course the game was taking.

People I know are meeting each other EVERYWHERE. This doesn't not help grow my social network :(

Statement of Purpose

I want to go to graduate school for operations research because:
-Optimization and Stochastic Processes. These are some big ways in which I mentally simplify life for myself. Breaking down a problem into it's own steps, modelling possibilities/choices/knowledge as probabilities, considering expected values and variances of assorted situations.
-Research. I really enjoy the the experience of learning. The stress-release/dawning feeling is one of the most powerful and wonderful parts of life. Learning something before anyone else adds a feeling adventure and progress. Adding to humanity's body of knowledge makes me happy and proud.
-Academia. Surrounding myself with the most intelligent people is a great way to force me to excel, learn new ways of thinking, and makes it viable to forge new friendships with the people who will push me and expand my world view in the future.

Two pages of this stuff.... eventually.

Return of Tarzan...

Reading Edgar Rice Burroughs' stories of Tarzan and "The Professor and the Madman" (history of the OED) started me thinking about Victorian ideals. Burroughs is all about manly men and effeminate women, but seems to have very different ideas on the subject than I do. First of all, it is vital to him that Tarzan be of noble birth. It's interesting that nobility of blood is still so important in the 19th century, or maybe it's still really important and I'm just living the sheltered existence of a white boy among intelligentsia in the North East. On the other hand, there is something appealing about chivalry, great intelligence, and superhuman strength and agility...
All of these traits does E.R.B. ascribe to genetics and noble birth... hmmmmmm....

needs more brevity....

My post before last was and too long-winded. I tried to describe the events of my day, but as it was not nearly focused enough I said very little and expended more energy than was worthwhile.

Tonight I sucked at pool. While this is nothing new, I'd like to think I'm on tilt... still... from poker two nights ago. Played with my cousins in Salem, following it up with some Harpoon Hibernian and watching "Old School."

I really enjoy watching the greasy, selfish, good-at-heart character played by Vince Vaughn. His characters always seem to be coarse, rude, slightly dishonest and true friends. Maybe I identify with someone who's a complete asshole but good at heart....

After dodging the heavens opening up, I ran home from Dan and Tony's house in my new shoes, only slightly dampening them in the puddles. Upon arriving, I went to say good night to my parents when I noticed "Grosse Pointe Blank" playing on Encore Mystery. Every time I see John Cusack's life in that movie I want to become a reformed assassin. Army...?

For the first time ever I reversed a 'your mom' joke very successfully without resorting to another 'your mom' joke (or of course, "my mother's dead.")

*Shapiro Poker Game, Dealer is just finishing distribution of hole cards*
Sasha: Thanks man, you're great.
Dealer: That's what your mom said last night.
Sasha: And if you keep delivering pizza's on-time, I'm sure she'll keep saying it...

So couth....
